Today I concluded an interview with Michael Powers, the band director in Thorndale ISD. It was a pleasure to talk with him. In a nearly two hour talk we covered lots of ground about his career and his successful work in small schools. His episode comes out in October.
I also managed to snag Kelly Rushfeldt, the band director in Brady ISD. As soon as the insanity that is football season in Texas is over, I'll be heading his way to talk about the Brady Band and his time in small schools. Kelly's episode comes out in December. Stay tuned!

I travel to Taylor this coming Sunday to interview Michael Powers, the band director in Thorndale ISD. He's done some outstanding work in his time there and I am, of course, looking forward to comparing our experiences in that small town. It should be a great interview.
Thanks, Michael!
Episode 3 with Travis Hobson is now up on SoundCloud and iTunes.
It was great to talk with Travis and get a look at what it took to make his time in Wall so successful. Thanks, Travis!
Today I learned of the passing of Colin Chichurka. In episode two I pay homage to him.
Colin was a great teacher and a good friend. I'll miss him. I'll interviewing Elizabeth Kriczky this coming Friday. Elizabeth is the band director at Holland High School. I'm really looking forward to meeting with her and talking about her experiences in Texas small schools.
Elizabeth's episode will be out in November. Stay tuned! I've just wrapped my interview with Stacy Gist. It's a long one. We met at Lone Star Grille in Cedar Park. If you haven't had the Spicy Sriracha Burger you need to.
It was great to talk to Stacy about his experiences in Lexington and in Hutto. He's a great guy and an excellent teacher. What's more is that he gets it. Travis' interview is now in the can and ready to post to SoundCloud and iTunes.
Episode 2 will be coming September 1. Stay tuned! I've finally managed to snag Stacy Gist and I'll be meeting with him this coming Sunday. We'll be talking about his time in Lexington and how those experiences have played a role in the success he now enjoys at Hutto. Episode three comes out in October. After a stumble a couple of days ago, the podcast is back on SoundCloud and has been resubmitted to iTunes. It should be up again in the iTunes store soon. Stay tuned for episode two coming in early September. Thanks for listening!
The podcast is now available on iTunes. Check it out!
https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/teaching-band-in-small-town-texas/id1271270461 After many hours yesterday working to create a website and discovering how an RSS feed works, the podcast is now pending approval in iTunes. I'll post the link here when it becomes available. In the meantime, you can find the podcast on soundcloud by clicking the link below the photos on the homepage or here in the blog. It's my first go at something like this so I'm sure that by professional standards it's a little rough. The learning curve on this was very steep.
